My Philosophy for Teaching Children
In my studio, I strive to offer students
a chance to explore and create on the piano in a positive, supportive
environment.
Students should be allowed to enjoy
the process as well as experiencing the art and beauty of music. I truly feel that a
well-rounded musical education helps students define for themselves what music means to
them.
Please bear in mind that no two students are
exactly alike, and children (as well as adults) learn at different rates of speed. Therefore, I
approach students as individuals and attempt to challenge each according to his or her unique
potential. Music is not easy, and may not always be "fun". However, given sufficient time and
structured practice, it does become enjoyable to master the many different aspects of this
art.
Children up to 12 years of
age start with traditional piano lessons,
including note reading and technique. Also taught are:
music
theory: skills to improve sightreading and playing
ear
training: improves the ability to hear music, which translates to improved
playing
creative skills in
composing: composing one's own music, or improvising, helps build
self-confidence and creativity
Students, 12 and
older, in addition to the traditional training as
listed above, are also introduced to chords, playing by ear and improvisation.
The benefits of piano lessons for children are many. Some parents have an attitude that they'll
let their child take piano lessons only as long as the child wants to.
But piano lessons should be taken seriously and
parents should realize that they are actually an investment in their child's overall
education.
